Summary
Amarius Mims is shaping up to be one of the most interesting prospects projected to go in the first round of this years draft. The former 5-Star OT checks all the physical boxes for a NFL lineman. At 6’ 7” 340 lbs, with fluid movement skills and fantastic play strength, he more than looks the part. Mims is a scheme versatile run blocker. He possesses the power and hand strength to create push at the point of attack and the first step quickness and agility to pull and block out in space. There are times where Mims has issues controlling his balance when blocking smaller players in the open field, typically coming from trying to take kill shots out in space. A poor habit of lunging at moving targets makes him susceptible to getting out over his knees and losing his footing. Mims is also a plus player in pass protection. Given his size and length he has the ability to neutralize power rushers attempting bull rush or long arm moves. He also has the necessary foot quickness and awareness to mirror speed rushers and pass off stunts. Mims doesn’t have top end hand placement in pass protection but he has active powerful hands that continue to work to find a foothold. Once Mims has a grip on defenders it’s near impossible to get free due to his high end grip strength. The biggest question surrounding Mims is going to be his lack of experience and injury history. The physical makeup and tape scream Top-15 pick but for a player with only 8 career starts to his name there will be questions, especially given his multiple lower body injuries in 2023. Mims is too talented at a position of value to slip far in the first round but teams with concerns about his health and sample size may cause him to slide farther down than a player of his talent should.
