Scouting Report: Chop Robinson (EDGE) - Penn State

Summary
Demeioun “Pork Chop” Robinson is a former 4-Star recruit from the state of Maryland. The #1 overall player from the state in the 2020 class spent his Freshman year at the University of Maryland before transferring to Penn State for his final two seasons. Robinson’s scouting report starts and ends with his athletic ability. An uniquely gifted athlete he has elite burst and explosion, as evidenced by his 1.54 10-yard split at the combine (a record for a defender over 250+ pounds). Robinson pairs his dynamic first step with a quality pass rush arsenal - the club rip, two hand swipe and chop move being his favorites - to be a highly productive speed rusher. He has the balance and flexibility in his core and ankles to quickly turn the corner and come flat to the quarterback. Despite being a little undersized, he has a plus power rush profile due to his explosive lower half that gives him an effective bull rush and speed to power move. Robinson pairs his athleticism with a high end motor that always turned up to 100, sometimes to his detriment (but more on that in a second). His speed and effort in the open field makes him a nightmare for scrambling quarterbacks when the play breaks down. For all his pass rushing gifts Robinson is a poor run defender. He lacks the size or length to engage and shed offensive lineman. But his biggest issue is a lack of engagement on rushing down, Robinson has one goal on the football field, to rush the passer. He will often run himself up the field and out of the play as a run defender. The best way to get impact from him as a run defender is slanting him across the face of lineman or having him attack single gaps where he can leverage his quickness and burst. Robinson best projects as a designated pass rusher in either a 3-4 or 4-3 single gap defense, spending a majority of his time as a stand up Wide-9. While he lacks the run game chops to be a true three down player, his athletic ability and pass rushing prowess will make him an impact player and versatile third down weapon for any defense. Robinson lacks the overall game to be included in the top tier of EDGE rushers in this class but players with his ability to impact the quarterback don’t typically last very long in the draft.
