Summary
AT Perry committed to Wake Forest in 2018 as a three star recruit from the state of Florida. Over the course of his 5 year career he was one of the most productive players in not just Wake Forest but ACC history. Perry will leave Wake as the third all time receiving leader for the program.
Perry is a prototypical X receiver. At 6’ 3” he possesses a massive wingspan and excellent long speed. His best routes stem from the vertical route tree (Post/Comeback/Fade) but he also displays the ability to win on in breakers and slants. He is very adept at using his frame to wall off defenders and does a good job of finding open zones. Perry does a wonderful job varying his footwork and tempo in his route stems to manipulate defenders. He is excellent at stepping on DBs toes and attacking their blind spots. Perry is not particularly quick in and out of his breaks; he uses nuance and physicality to win at the top of his routes. A large amount of his production comes down the field (15.0 Career ADOT) where his ball skills and body control shine. Perry is plenty fast enough to take the top of the defense (4.47 40) but it is more build up speed and he struggles to win in confined spaces. He wins at the catch point with sticky hands and a large wingspan that is able to pluck balls outside his radius. However a poor habit of letting the ball get into his frame results in far too many drops for his playstyle. Perry must also improve at attacking the ball in 50/50 scenarios at the next level, something someone with his leaping ability and catch radius should excel at. He tends to struggle to get off the line of scrimmage versus press far more than a player of his size should, too often letting defenders inside his frame disrupting his route timing. Perry will never be confused for a big time YAC receiver given his lack of short area quickness but he is able to use his size and balance to shake initial tacklers out in space. Defenders often underestimate his speed in the open field and take poor angles in pursuit.
AT Perry has the physical makeup of a true WR1 on the outside. His wingspan, body control and long speed make him a difficult player to contain on the perimeter. There will be questions about his ability to separate at the next level but if he can continue to refine his release package and improve his physicality at the catch point he has the potential to be a starter at X for a long time.
