Summary
B.J. Ojulari, younger brother of New York Giants EDGE rusher Azeez, is one of the most athletic pass rushers in this class. Similar to his brother, Ojulari wins with his speed and bends off the edge. His first step quickness and finishing speed makes him a terror for opposing tackles. He has a tendency to false step that can set him behind the Eightball but he gets off the line so quickly it doesn’t really matter versus most college lineman. Ojulari has excellent flexibility that allows him to turn the corner on even the quickest of tackles. He also has tremendous lateral agility which allows him to be an effective rusher on stunts, as he is able to maintain his speed while changing rush lanes. Right now Ojulari wins with largely his physical tools and some remedial pass rush moves like the speed rip and push pull. He needs to improve his pass rush angles as his desire to evade engagement with tackles typically leads to longer pass rush paths, this allows opposing tackles to run him past his target. Ojulari does not lack power, in fact he translates his speed to power very well and has a wonderful straight arm. It appears to be more of a lack of desire to initiate contact. Ojulari is not an effective grappler at his point and often struggles to disengage from lineman. His aversion to contact shows up in the run game as well, where he struggles to take on blocks at the point of attack. Ojulari plays with poor leverage and an uneven base against runs to his size. His desire to evade blockers makes him a weak point in run defense. He does use his quickness and mobility to make the occasional splash play but it is too infrequent to rely on. Ojulari has an aggressive mindset that leads to lots of hustle sacks, but it can also be taken advantage of in run fits where he will often run himself out of the play. Pass rushers with Ojulari’s physical make up and bend don’t come around very often but he is a long way from being NFL ready. With his body type and play style he projects to be a stand up 3-4 OLB that will not fit all schemes. Ojulari has all the tools to be a top tier pass rusher at the next level, he is just very raw right now and will struggle on early downs for the first couple years of his career. Teams willing to bet on his physical talents, must bank on their ability to develop his pass rush plan once they get him in their building with the hope he can reach his All-Pro caliber ceiling.
