Summary
CJ Stroud is an accurate passer with a prototypical build. Stroud excels in structure where he is one of the most accurate passers in college football. When he is in rhythm and has time to process he rarely misses. His ability to connect on touch and layered throws is fantastic. Stroud has an above average arm that can access the whole field but he lacks elite zip and the ball tends to fade when he has pressure in his face. There are two big concerns with Stroud; one is that he crumbles under pressure. His accuracy and decision making collapses when he is forced to create and play out of structure. The second issue is his unwillingness to create with his legs. A good athlete that shows flashes too often does freeze up and take unnecessary risks with the ball. Stroud has all the physical traits to be a franchise QB the question for him is when inevitably things are not perfect around him like at Ohio State does he have the mental fortitude and creativity to make plays for his team. The Jared Goff comps are spot on as he looks like a sure fire #1 pick when kept clean but in this day and age to be a star you need to create and right now he just doesn’t do enough of it. Teams that are optimistic about his potential will point to the Georgia game in 2023 as evidence of what Stroud can do if he hits his ceiling. With his physical tools he should still be a Day 1 pick but it will take a good coaching staff to unlock that ceiling.
