Summary
Darnell Wright is a big, long right tackle with tons of high level experience. Wright has over 2,500 collegiate snaps at both tackle spots during his time in Knoxville. His experience shows in his technique where his footwork is spot on. His hand placement is impeccable and rarely misses, when he does he is able to smoothly reset them. His hands also pack quiet a punch and tend to send lighter players flying. Wright loves to aggressively in set pass pro where he can use his size and power to dictate a rusher's path. His ability to anchor vs power combined with his grappling strength means he is a difficult player to disengage from once he gets his mitts on you. In the run game he lacks top end mobility in space but he understands his assignment and has the power to road grade defenders on combo blocks and pull assignments out in space. The lack of top end lateral mobility can show up in pass sets as well, speed rushers can get short corners on him if he does not set deep enough. Wright tends to counteract this with his length and handwork. A powerful blocker Wright loves to finish his blocks which is the temperament you love from a tackle but at times he can get out over his feet and bend at his waist causing him to get tossed off balance. His lack of lower body flexibility can be an issue versus top end pass rushers as well. Wright has experience at both tackle spots but he projects to stay on the right side in the NFL which is where he really shined during his time in college. He will likely thrive in a gap scheme that can take advantage of his physical power and hide his average mobility. Wright’s combination of refined hand work, physical stature, and consistent high floor play in a premier conference makes him a real candidate to be a first round pick and the top right tackle off the board come draft night.
