Summary
Dawand Jones is an absolute mountain of a man at right tackle. One of the biggest standouts at the Senior Bowl both on and off the field he quickly became one of the top right tackle prospects in this class. At 6’8” 375 he has the length and power to throw around any defender at any level. He has excellent anchor ability in pass protection and uses his size to wash down defenders in the run game. Pad level can be an issue for him at his height but once he gets going downhill he loves to finish his blocks. Jones is more than just a big wall, he has plus movement skills for a man of his stature. A quick first step allows him to get out on the move in the run game. His stop start ability is lacking but once he has his momentum going out in space he is a smooth mover who road grades defenders. Jones has powerful hands that stun defenders and are extremely difficult to disengage from. He actively works his hands until he is able to grasp defenders and end their rush. At his height he can tend to struggle with punching too high resulting in penalties. High end speed rushers can give Jones trouble due to his lack of elite foot speed and recovery athleticism. While his feet aren’t lighting fast in pass pro he is able to use his length to steer defenders wide until he can get in back position. A top heavy player, Jones has a bad habit of bending over at the waist when engaging with defenders. Rushers also can get inside his frame and knock him off balance, as his feet get narrow when setting deep. Jones counteracts this with excellent snatch-trap technique to take advantage of over extended defenders. At Jones' size he projects to only be a right tackle, but a damn good right tackle. His size and length are top notch, when paired with his above average quickness for his size and excellent technique he has all the makings of a Top 50 player. Jones may not be the type of tackle for every team, but teams looking for a right tackle that is an excellent run blocker should be very interested. He projects to be a quality starter with the physical tools and upside of a Pro Bowl caliber tackle.
