Summary
Derick Hall was a three sport star in high school, lettering in football, basketball and track before committing to Auburn as a 4-Star recruit. A three year starter and four year contributor he collected over 20 sacks in his collegiate career. Hall was a team captain in 2022 and by all reports is a fantastic leader and locker room guy.
Hall is a powerful defender in the run game. He has outstanding natural leverage and heavy hands that grants him tremendous first strike power. Hall’s length and hand strength allow him to extend blockers and shed them with ease. When aligned outside the tackle he sets a strong edge and uses his length to keep his outside shoulder free. As a pass rusher Hall is a true power rusher. He pairs excellent first step quickness with powerful hands to jump lineman. His ability to push and collapse the pocket is excellent. Hall shows a legit long arm move and converts speed to power extremely well. While Hall does not have the best bend he overcomes it by utilizing his natural leverage to get under blockers pads and work through the outside shoulder. When he is able to get the corner he shows tremendous finishing ability. Hall’s motor and finishing steps are top tier, resulting in a high pressure to sack conversion rate
Hall is very up and down as a run defender. He is inconsistent at the point of attack with his base and is often off balance as a result. Despite his thick frame he lacks the play strength to be reduced down inside. Hall also is a tick slow to react in the run game, often playing catch up. He is slow to read and react, often losing his eyes to action in the backfield. As a pass rusher Hall struggles to turn the corner, his squatter build is very tight in the mid section. When he is not able to win with physicality in his rush he struggles to win. Hall lacks any real hand counters, mostly relying on speed and power to jump lineman. He is very reliant on his strength and length translating to win. Hall is very alignment specific. He lacks the play strength to reduce down inside and is too stiff as a mover to consistently drop in coverage. Hall will likely only be able to play on the line of scrimmage on the outside shoulder of the tackle.
Derick Hall has the physical profile and off field intangibles of a long time NFL pro. His blend of explosion and power will be highly coveted in Day 2 of the draft. Lack of bends and being alignment specific may limit his long term ceiling at the next level. Hall projects best as a secondary pass rusher who compliments a star with his motor and power. Improvement’s in his technique at the next level should unlock more of his physical tools and make him a high floor consistent secondary option.
