Summary
Devon Achane committed to Texas A&M in 2019 after being one of the best players in Houston during high school. He was an immediate contributor for A&M, accumulating over 2,000 yards in his 3 year career. Achane in his Junior year was a first team All-SEC player at RB and as an all purpose player.
Achane is one of the most dynamic and explosive backs in this class. He has game breaking speed (4.32 40 time) making him a big play waiting to happen. Achane is very elusive with the ball in his hands out in space. He showcases tremendous lateral agility and stop start ability. Achane has clean and efficient footwork that allows him to maintain speed as he stacks his cuts. He does an excellent job using his speed to stress defenses horizontally before attacking against the grain. Achane shows great urgency in his runs, consistently putting pressure on defenders to take proper angles. Despite being of smaller stature, Achane does a tremendous job of running hard between the tackles and often weaponizes his size to get lost in the shuffle. Achane’s speed and quickness translates to the passing game as well. He shows the body control and hands to operate as a receiving weapon from the slot and out of the backfield.
Achane’s biggest weakness is going to be his size. The history of sub 190 pound RBs finding success in the NFL is a short one. Achane has never managed a full workload and likely never will. He will always have durability questions and his snaps will need to be closely monitored over the course of a season. Despite his willingness to run in between the tackles he lacks power or leg drive. Achane’s lack of size generally leads to poor yards after contact numbers as well. Despite his impact as a pass catcher on third down he does limit a teams schematic versatility on third down as his size limits him as a pass blocker.
Devon Achane will bring an instant jolt of speed and elusiveness to whatever offense he joins. At his size he will never hold a full time workload and may have some seasons with nagging injuries, despite his ability to reduce his strike zone and protect himself. Achane projects best as a change of pace back in a zone scheme that makes his impact on third down and in the return game. A successful career would require Achane to be an outlier at his size but he has the combination of athleticism and vision to get it done.
