Summary
DJ Turner is a former 3 star recruit from the state of Florida who ended up being a 4 year letterman at University of Michigan. He appeared in 36 games, racked up 22 total starts and was a two time All-Big Ten selection.
Turner is one of the best athletes in this class posting 90th plus percentile testing numbers in the speed and explosion categories at the combine. His athletic profile shows up on tape as well. Turner has quick feet and excellent change of direction ability that allows him to mirror receivers in space. His fluid hips and tremendous long speed allow him to turn and run with anyone. Turner's ability to accelerate combined with above average instincts make him an effective zone corner. Turner has sub optimal size and length for a boundary corner and it shows in his press coverage. Despite his quick feet at the line he struggles to initiate and maintain contact as a man coverage corner. His lack of length also shows up when attacking the ball in the air. Turner is comfortable turning his head and tracking the ball while it is in flight but struggles to break up passes when receivers are between him and the ball due to his lack of arm length. Given his physical limitations Turner may be better suited for the slot long term at the NFL. He has shown enough tape to start on the boundary where he played in college but his short area quickness and football IQ would be excellent in the slot as well.
Turner is a solid tackler in the open field but his stature limits the impact he has as a run defender. Issues with block destruction and brining down big ball carriers in space makes him an average run defender. A nice feather in Turner's cap is his history as an impact special teams player. His ball skills and overall athleticism give him the ability to make an impact as a returner, a role he moonlighted in for Michigan during the 2021 season.
Turner’s tremendous athletic profile and high level production in college indicates a quality NFL starter. Questions about lack of size and man coverage ability likely makes him scheme specific and hurts his overall draft stock. DJ Turner projects as a starting caliber corner with both inside and outside versatility at the NFL level.
