Summary
Gervon Dexter was a two sport athlete ii high school, starring in football and basketball, before committing to Florida in 2020. A three year contributor and two year starter, the Redshirt Sophomore put up 6 sacks and 80 tackles during that time. Dexter is a long, athletic defensive lineman who can take snaps at a variety of alignments on the interior. Dexter currently makes a majority of his impact as a run defender. Despite lacking first step quickness he is able to use his size and power to push back offensive lineman. He loves to use his powerful hands and length to forklift lineman at the point of attack. Dexter’s read and react ability combined with his above average lateral agility make him an excellent pop and shed player in two gap schemes. A powerful player, Dexter is very difficult to move from the point of attack by a single blocker. He does have issues standing up to double teams due to inconsistent leverage and poor base sets. His lack of first step quickness means he is often catching blockers and it allows technical lineman to get under his pads and drive him back. The same lack of quickness is an issue as a pass rusher where Dexter currently wins primarily with athleticism. Lack of burst and any consistent pass rush moves leads to him being a project in pass rush situations. Dexter gets most of his pass rush production from his power, he has an excellent bull rush move, and his motor. He never quits on plays as a rusher, when combined with his great closing speed (90+ Percentile 40 Time) he is excellent at finishing plays when he does win. In a weaker IDL class Dexter’s movement skills and size present an intriguing ceiling. Dexter projects as a Day 2 pick who is very raw but high ceiling given his physical traits. He will function as an early down rotation player early in his career as he learns to refine his game to become a more complete three down player
