Summary
Hendon Hooker and the Volunteers were one of the best stories of the college football season. Before his ACL injury Hooker was a Heisman front runner and made himself some serious money. In the Tennessee offense Hooker showed off his deep ball accuracy and mobility week in and week out. Hooker has an above average arm and loves to push the ball down the field, while his accuracy in the short areas can be a little shaky; he throws a pretty deep ball. A long strider at 6’ 4” he can move better than you would think and was a serious threat with his legs on designed runs and scrambles. Hooker displays questionable pocket presence despite his mobility. He has a poor habit of patting the ball in the pocket and invites more pressure than you would like. The big question with Hooker is how he will translate to the NFL as an older player coming from a scheme that is drastically different from what he will run at the next level. The lack of true progressions, lots of gun work and an offense that utilizes the wide hashes in college makes his pro projection tough. When coupled with his age (25 years old on draft night) and the fact that he will be working back from an ACL injury, it tough to know when he will be ready to contribute. A talented player with some promising tools he should be a Day 2 player, but the combination of scheme transition, age and injury may cause him to slide past his talent level as teams weigh whether he is worth the investment given non-football factors.
