Summary
Jalen Carter is the latest in the line of freak Georgia defenders along the defensive line and he may just be the best of them. A unique blend of quickness and power he strikes fear into offenses no matter where he lines up. Largely a 3T, Carter has the requisite athleticism to bounce outside and the power to hang with the big boys in the middle. As a run defender he has the power to take on double teams in the hole and the quickness to penetrate the backfield. He does have a tendency to over pursue plays when he gets penetration but it generally creates chaos. As a pass rusher he is more than capable of overwhelming lineman with just his physical tools. What makes Carter so great is his willingness to use his hands. His punches are quick and powerful, he uses them to disrupt and control the lineman he engages with. As a pass rush plan he shows a nasty swim move and a club rip as a secondary move. He will need to add more tools to his belt as he becomes a pro but the moves he currently has are effective. Carter flashes the lateral mobility to quickly get home on stunts. His motor and IQ show up on rushes where his initial move does not get home. He understands how quarterbacks attempt to scramble and gets his hands up in the quick game. A complete player with few weaknesses and lots of strengths there isn’t much to knock in his game. Critics have questions about his lack of traditional production (9 sacks in 3 years) and his one year sample size as a starter. There are also the lingering issues of his off field questions. However, given his physical tools and refined technique as a pass rusher Carter has all the tools to be a #1 overall pick. Most teams will look past the noise and the questions and see on film a true game wrecker that has the ability to single handedly change how a team plays defense.
