Summary
Jarrett Patterson has been a staple on the Notre Dame offensive line since he committed in 2018. A multi-year starter at both LG and C, Patterson never gave up a sack in his collegiate career.
Patterson is a well rounded and versatile lineman. After logging over 2,000 snaps at center in his career he made the switch to left guard in 2022 and did not miss a beat. Patterson is extremely technically sound. He does a tremendous job in the run game with his hand placement and footwork. He positions his body well to seal off bigger and faster players. As a pass protector he shows above average balance and anchor ability. Patterson is extremely adept at resetting his hands and staying in front of pass rushers. His experience shines through on tape where he is an excellent help blocker. Patterson’s head is always on a swivel looking for work.
The biggest concern for Patterson is his below average physical profile. He lacks power in the run game, often struggling to displace blockers at the point of attack. Patterson has below average weight and length for the position. He consistently struggles to contain athletic defensive lineman. While he has good first step quickness he struggles as a blocker out on the move. Patterson lacks the foot speed to sustain blocks out in space or at the second level. As a pass protector he lacks the lateral ability to recover when beaten off the line. He relies so heavily on his technique to bail him out he struggles greatly with high level pass rushers.
Patterson’s blend of experience and technique is a lot to like. While his lack of physical traits may cap his ceiling he has the intangibles to have a long career. Patterson projects best as a guard in a gap scheme offense. His ability to be a Day 1 starter and an interior swing player holds a lot of value. Patterson may never be a star but he is the type of player every team would love to have as a way to insulate risk.
