Summary
Jartavius “Quan” Martin committed to Illinois in 2018 as a three star recruit from Florida. He was an instant starter at CB his freshman year before shifting to a nickel/safety hybrid role towards the end of his career. Martin leaves the Illini with 181 tackles and 18 pass break ups to his name.
Martin is a hard nosed and versatile player. He logged significant snaps at outside and nickel corner as well as both safety spots during his time at Illinois. In the run game Martin is an aggressive and instinctual player. He is adept as running the alley from deep safety alignments and shows strong block deconstruction as a box run defender. He brings power behind his pads as a tackler and does an excellent job wrapping up. As a coverage player Martin is scheme versatile. He shows the IQ and burst to close on routes in front of him in zone. His physical nature on the back end makes receivers think twice about crossers over the middle. In man coverage he displays quick feet and oily hips to turn and run. Martin’s body control shows up in coverage and at the catch point. He possesses soft hands and excellent ball skills, when coming downhill and while in trail technique. Martin’s fluidity and versatility as a coverage player allowed the Illinois defense to rotate late and disguise coverage quite frequently.
Martin tested as an explosive and dynamic athlete at the combine but it does not consistently translate to the field. He displays above average speed but it is not enough to stick as a single high player. When Martin takes poor pursuit angles ball carriers are too often able to beat him to the edge. He often loses at the top of routes in man coverage to quicker receivers who catch him flat footed. This happens in a large part because Martin has average route recognition skills while in man coverage. He is susceptible to being beaten by crafty runners out of the slot. Despite having the necessary frame to be a NFL box player Martin does not display the play strength to take opposing teams tight ends. He also lacks the length to be counted on as an outside corner in the NFL.
Jartavius Martin brings a lot of great things as a defensive back in terms of athleticism, versatility and effort. The flashes on his tape indicate he should be a starting caliber safety in base with the versatility to rotate down into the box in nickel. However, until he becomes more consistent as a coverage player and displays the ability to translate his athleticism better he projects as largely just as nickel. Martin brings enough physical traits and potential upside to make him a Top 75 player in this class. He projects as an instant impact nickel and special teams contributor with the physical tools and upside to develop into a versatile safety on the back end.
