Summary
Joe Tippmann was a four star recruit from the state of Indiana out of high school. Tippmann was a 2 year starter at Center for Wisconsin and only gave up 1 sack during that timespan.
A ridiculous athlete for his size Tippmann checks all the boxes to be an NFL center. Measuring in as a 80th percentile player in all size categories is rare. At 6’6” 313 he has the raw power to displace opposing lineman in the run game. His powerful hands and competitive toughness leads to a lot of pancakes on film. Tippmann is more than just a mauler at the Center position, he is also an excellent move blocker. He gets out of his stance far faster than a man of his size should and is excellent at blocking out in space. Tippmann routinely hits his marks as a puller and when climbing to the second level. The same footspeed helps in pass protection where he has the lateral mobility to easily mirror defenders. When paired with plus length anchor ability, and high football IQ it’s no shocker Tippmann only gave up 1 sack in his collegiate career.
Tippmann does struggle with his height in the interior. He has to work harder than most to maintain his leverage in the run game. Too often does he get out over his feet and it makes it difficult for him to sustain blocks. In an effort to attack smaller players he typically shoots out hard and fast out of his stance but it can make him susceptible to the push pull move. Slow punches also allow smaller defenders to get inside Tippmann’s frame and manipulate his leverage.
Few interior offensive lineman in this class possess Tippmann’s physical tools. His size and athleticism gives him both scheme and positional versatility. A large amount of his negatives can be coached out of him over time and given his high football IQ improvement is to be expected. Tippmann projects as a Day 2 pick that can be an immediate starter at the NFL level. Given his physical stature and quick feet he has the potential to land a starting gig at either Center or Guard for his future NFL team.
