Summary
Joey Porter Jr, son of former Steelers LB Joey Porter Sr., is a long physical press corner. Coming in at 6’2” 200 lbs. Porter loves to get up on the line of scrimmage and dictating reps. He marries his punches and footwork together in order to stay balanced and in control. Porter is aggressive with his hands but patient with his feet as a cover corner. Porter’s aggression and love for contact does lead to him being a little grabby at the top of routes, which can result in penalties. He has the long speed to turn and run with receivers and is very comfortable playing with his back to the ball. There will be questions about his lack of ball production in college but the tape shows a player who is adept at turning his head and playing the ball in the air. His long arms him disrupt throwing lanes, forcing QB’s to be extremely accurate when he is in coverage. Porter has the length and instincts to be an effective zone corner but average acceleration means he does have trouble closing on balls in front of him quickly. Penn State asked him to play some safety after coverage rotations and his instincts and open field speed indicate he can be an impactful Cover-3 player as long as he is not asked to backpedal. A tall corner he has the ability to turn and run but some stiffness in his lower body hurts his ability to stay with quicker players in space. Porter’s aggressive mindset as a coverage player also carries over into his ability as a run defender. Instincts and size give him confidence to attack aggressively downhill in run fits. He brings a lot of power behind his pads when he tackles, his length also gives him the ability to make tackles outside his radius. Porter projects to be a first round pick given his size, athleticism and the multiple years of high quality play he has put on tape. He is the best press corner in this year's class. While his play style isn’t the most versatile and won’t fit every team's ideals if he lands with a man heavy defense that asks their corners to contribute in the run game he will thrive.
