Summary
Jonathan Mingo was a four star recruit out of the state of Mississippi in high school. The 2022 All-SEC wideout was a four year starter for the Rebels. Despite missing time in 2021, Mingo will leave Oxford with over 1,500 career receiving yards.
Mingo is an interesting blend of size and speed. The 6’ 1” 220 pound wideout is a fluid mover for his size. When coupled with tremendous explosion measurables and good long speed (4.46 40) it’s surprising he does not have more fanfare. Mingo shows good quickness at the line of scrimmage in his release packages, though he does have a poor tendency to false step. His ability to sink his hips and explode out of breaks is tremendous for his size. His experience shines through as a route runner. Mingo displays a full route tree and especially thrives on double moves where he is able to manipulate defenders with deceptive stems and eyes. Mingo displays strong body control and ball tracking when the ball is in the air. Despite his size he struggles to be physical at the catch point. Too often does he wait for balls to come down to him as opposed to attacking them in the air. This type of body catching results in far too many drops though it did improve in 2022 (14.8 DRP% -> 7.3 DRP%). Mingo is not the most dynamic player with the ball in his hands but is a fluid enough mover at his size to shake defenders. His long speed tends to surprise tacklers and he can house short passes if given an angle. The most interesting part about Mingo’s evaluation is the versatility he shows. Primarily lining up out wide during his time in Oxford, Ole Miss began to use him with more variety in 2022. He saw career high alignment numbers as a TE, H-Back and Slot. His size and movement skills allow him to be a moveable chess piece in formations. Mingo is a willing and capable block but he will need to improve his technique if he wants to continue to be used as a chess piece at the next level.
Mingo is a strong athlete at his size and displays a well rounded game. His route running ability and long speed indicated he has the ability to be a strong WR2 at the next level. His versatility and movement skills indicate future growth as an all around player. Mingo projects as a Day 2 pick who should be an immediate impact starter. He best fits as a secondary pass catching option in an offense that likes to move around their players in creative ways. His floor is as an auxiliary pass catcher but if a team can unlock his full potential he has the ability to be a versatile mismatch at the next level.
