Summary
Jordan Battle committed to Alabama in 2019 as a four star recruit out of Florida. Battle lettered in all four of his seasons in Tuscaloosa, starting in three of them. The senior safety accrued 175 tackles and 6 interceptions for the Crimson Tide during that time span.
Battle is a well rounded and experienced safety. He logged significant time at both safety spots as well as showing the ability to play the slot. Given his size and length he has the ability to take snaps at EDGE when in more condensed areas of the field. Battle is an excellent run defender at the strong safety position. He has a big frame and great first step explosion that allows him to fill the alley with power. Battle has excellent spatial awareness, he does an excellent job of navigating traffic in the run game. His size gives him above average block deconstruction ability. A strong tackler, Battle brings power behind his pads, though he does have a poor habit of lunging when tackling space. He takes strong pursuit angles to make up for his lack of top end speed and does a tremendous job of utilizing his help leverage in run defense.
As a coverage player Battle uses his physicality and high intelligence to make an impact. Battle’s experience shows in coverage, where he does an excellent job communicating on the back end, routinely passing off route concepts correctly. His first step quickness and downhill instincts allow him to trigger on plays in front of him and be a disruptor. Battle also does a fantastic job of transitioning out of coverage to run defense. Lack of true top end speed reduces his overall range as a safety. Battle tends to struggle as a single high safety, he fits better in two high schemes that allow him to play down hill. Lack of top end speed and slight stiffness in his hips impacts him as a man coverage player as well. Battle struggles to contain quicker players out in space if he cannot get hands on.
Battle is a versatile safety with multiple high end traits for the position, who should be a quality starter. Lack of range and man coverage ability limits his projection as a high end player but if paired with an athletic rangy safety partner his plus traits should shine. Battle projects as a strong safety at the next level who thrives in two high looks, as well as down around the line of scrimmage. With his experience and SEC production Battle should be able to step in on day one for an NFL team.
