Summary
Julius Brents was the 5th ranked recruit from the state of Indiana out of high school before committing to Iowa. He saw action in 2 of his 3 years for the Hawkeyes before transferring to Kansas State in 2021. Brents started 27 straight in Manhattan and earned All-Big 12 honors both years.
Brents is a long physical corner. His impressive wingspan (99th percentile) allows him to disrupt receivers timing at the line of scrimmage and on reroutes. He shows patient feet at the line of scrimmage and enough long speed to run down the field. As a zone corner he shows strong spatial awareness and uses his length to disrupt throwing lanes. Brents is an explosive leaper, which allows him to sky for balls in contested catch scenarios. A physical player in coverage, Brents also has no issue coming out of coverage to tackle. He is a sound tackler in space with an impressive tackle radius. The 6’ 3” corner is not afraid to use his frame in run defense which gives some optimism for his ability to have safety versatility in the future. Brents is not afraid to take on blockers at the point of attack and does an excellent job using his length to leverage in the run game.
As most taller corners do, Brents struggles with quickness as a coverage player. He lacks the lateral ability or short area quickness to mirror receivers in space. His acceleration and declaration ability or lack thereof is apparent on double moves. Brents is a high hipped player that struggles to smoothly flip his hips. When coupled with good but not great long speed there are concerns about his overall man coverage ability at the next level. Brent's best scheme fit is in a zone heavy defense that when asked to play man allows him to get physical at the line of scrimmage.
Julius Brents projects as a Day 2 pick who’s best traits are his length and explosiveness. One of the more physical players in this class he will bring a nice edge to a defensive backfield. Brent’s safety versatility is also a nice feather in his cap. Teams that value length and zone coverage ability should be interested in him starting around the middle of Round 2.
