Summary
Luke Schoonmaker committed to Michigan in 2018 as a 3-Star prospect from Connecticut after starring in baseball and football in high school. He was able to log snaps at tight end and on special teams from his freshman year but didn’t fully move into a big time role until 2021. In his final two years of school he logged 600 yards and 6 scores and earned All-Big 10 honors twice. Schoonmaker leaves Michigan as a Redshirt Senior who will be 25 by Week 1, placing him on the older end as a prospect.
Schoonmaker is a well rounded player who does a lot of things well. He lined up largely as an inline player for Michigan but showed the ability to operate out of the slot and H-Back. As a run blocker he fires out with good first step quickness and has the footspeed to move with defenders while engaged. He shows good initial pop in his hands at the point of attack. Schoonmaker has a strong blocking technique especially when he needs to reset his hands. The biggest issue for him is strength at the point of attack. Schoonmaker is not the biggest or longest and struggles to displace in the run game. He has the technique to be a competent and versatile blocker but does not project to be an impact player in the run game.
As a receiver Schoonmaker shows good quickness off the line and is a fluid mover in space. He possesses loose hips that allow him to cleanly get in and out of his breaks. He shows an excellent understanding of zone defense and routinely finds soft spots to be available in. Schoonmaker has the body control to adjust to balls outside of his radius and corral errant throws. He has enough build up speed to threaten down the seam but is not a big play threat. He takes what the defense gives him as a YAC threat, rarely creating plays on his own. Schoonmaker is not explosive and struggles to make physical plays at the catch point. Far too often he waits for the ball to get to him and does not make plays in traffic, something that is reflected in his contested catch numbers. He also struggles with physicality in his routes, far too often being rerouted, disrupting concept timings.
Luke Schoonmaker is a high floor player that does most things you want from a tight end at least at an average level. He lacks an elite trait or the physical profile to be a high upside difference maker especially at his age. He projects best as a high end TE2 or low end TE1 at the next level. He fits best in an offense that operates out of 12 personnel a lot and manufacturer production for their pass catches via schemed looks.
