Summary
Luke Wypler entered Ohio State as a Top-100 prospect in the nation in 2019. A 19 game starter and Rimington Award watch list player in 2022 he was a staple along the Buckeye offensive line, only giving up 1 sack in three years.
Wypler is a well rounded high floor center prospect. He is an experienced player that should be able to play in a variety of schemes. As a run blocker he is excellent out in space where his balance and agility shine. He possesses excellent first step quickness, his ability to get out of his stance allows him to reach lineman up to a gap and a half over. His hands, while not the most powerful, are quick and locate very well. Wypler has below average length for the position which makes it difficult for him to solo block longer defenders. He struggles to engage and stay on longer, more powerful defenders. Average power limits his ability to displace defenders without the help of an additional blocker. Wypler wins with footwork and excellent technique in the run game.
As pass protector Wypler’s footwork shines as well. He is able to mirror defenders both in space and while engaged. He shows excellent balance and hand placement as a pass protector as well. Similar to his run blocking, more powerful defenders give him issues. Strong rushers that utilize bull rush and forklift moves expose his lack of length and give him difficulties. Wypler is a very intelligent blocker in pass protection. He constantly has his head on a swivel. Very rarely does he over commit and does an excellent job of chipping defenders when he is free.
Wypler is a high floor player who should have no problem starting from his first day in the NFL. He may lack any elite traits that would make him dominant but he also possesses no true weaknesses. Center is a position where IQ and technique reign supreme and physical limitations can often be covered up. Wypler projects as a starter center with scheme versatility and the ability to play guard in a pinch.
