Summary
Marvin Mims committed to Oklahoma as a 4-Star recruit out of Texas in 2019. He was an instant impact player for the Sooners, eclipsing 600 yards in all three seasons. The 21 year old speedster capped off his collegiate career with a 1,000 yard season on his way to the NFL Draft.
Mims is a big time boom or bust wide receiver. A large majority of his routes come close to the line of scrimmage or down the field. Mims uses his tremendous long speed (4.38 40 time) and excellent ball tracking to stretch defenses vertically. As a route runner he uses hard vertical stems to quickly get defensive backs on their heels and stress their leverage. Mims is excellent at stepping on toes and attacking blind spots to win down the field. A leaner player, Mims will never be considered a jump ball player but he posted great jumping numbers and a respectable 50% contested catch rate in college. When combined with a low career drop rate he is a dependable receiver at all three levels of the field. Oklahoma liked to get Mims the ball in space on screens and reverse where he is able to use his speed as a player maker in space. He shows excellent body control to maintain his speed while changing direction in the open field.
Mims’ thin frame will be a concern at the next level. He is sub 6 foot and 190 pounds which raises questions about his durability. Like most smaller receivers Mims struggles with physicality as a route runner. Press coverage and reroutes are very effective in disrupting his route timing. As a ball carrier he goes down very easily to first contact. As a route runner Mims has a very limited tree. He mostly operated off the vertical route tree in college and rarely attacked the middle of the field. This is likely because Mims is not a very twitchy player. He is a good athlete that can win in space but he doesn’t show above average separation quickness on routes that involve sharp cuts.
Marvin Mims is another skinny but dynamic receiver in the 2023 class. He shows excellent ability to threaten defenses vertically and has the juice to be an impactful player with the ball in his hands. Given his size and limited route tree he doesn’t project to be more than a WR 2 at the next level. Mims best fits as a field stretcher and play maker that operates on a low target volume, high efficiency game script player.
