Summary
Myles Murphy, a former Top 5 recruit in the nation, has been a star ever since he first arrived at Clemson. Murphy’s blend of size and athleticism allowed him to dominate ACC competition from the get go. A key cog in multiple lockdown Clemson defensive fronts, Murphy’s quick first step and long arms made him physically more talented than any blocker in his way. His sophomore year campaign put this all on display where he wreaked havoc in the run game with his superior tools. As a pass rusher he used a variety of moves to take advantage of his natural gifts such as the straight arm, push-pull and converting speed to power. However in 2022, his Junior year, the preseason Top-5 pick hype started to slow down. As more film was out there on him he could no longer win with just his athleticism and a lack of hand counters started to show up on his film. The inability to set up advanced pass rush plans that played off his primary moves stymied his production when he became the focus of the defense. His run game impact also suffered as his tendency to attack with a high pad level and narrow base allowed lineman to work him back off the ball at the point of attack. Murphy still has all the physical tools that NFL teams look for in a pass rusher in terms of length, bend and burst but he must continue to add nuance to his game. His physical tools are quite rare to find in college players, which likely means he will still be a first round player, even if he is not considered the blue chip prospect he once was. Teams in the mid to late first round will have him marked down on their boards as a high ceiling prospect with considerable physical tools that needs some coaching up. Murphy's ceiling projects to be a scheme versatile athletic game wrecker in all aspects which makes him more than worth taking a chance on.
