Summary
Paris Johnson Jr was the blind side protector in 2022 for CJ Stroud and was one of the best players on one of the top lines in the country. He bumped out to left tackle in 2022 for the Buckeyes after starring at right guard in 2021. On the outside Johnson’s length and agility really shone, his prototypical build and dancing bear like movement skills makes him an ideal tackle prospect. His quick feet at his size allows him to mirror pass rushers and cut off defenders in a variety of run schemes. When his first step quickness fails he is able to use his long arms to recover and steer defenders wide. Johnson has powerful and fast hands that can dominate defenders when he connects. Currently however they are far too inconsistent and it often leads to him grabbing outside defenders frames or being in disadvantageous positions. A tall player Johnson struggles with balance and leverage at times. In the run game defenders get under his pads too often and when he tries to fire out low he can get over his knees too much. In pass sets over aggression and narrow bases lead to him being off balance in space vs top rushers too often for a player of his caliber. He also occasionally stops his feet when he is gearing up to engage with an opponent leaving him flat footed. When Johnson’s technique is right however, he is able to stay in front of most speed rushers and can anchor against really good power rushers. 2022 was Johnson’s first year at left tackle so it is not shocking he is a little rough around the edges. Given his athletic traits, a young declaring age (21 on draft night) and his flashes of high level hand and footwork he should challenge for the top tackle in this class. Players at a premium position with his ceiling often don't have to wait too long on the first night to hear their name called even if they are a bit rough around the edges.
