Summary
Parker Washington committed to Penn State in 2020 as a four star recruit and became an instant impact player. The Redshirt Sophomore receiver leaves the Nittany Lions with the 13th most receiving yards in program history. Washington logged a reception in all 32 games of his career.
Washington is a fleet footed slot receiver with dependable hands. Washington shows tremendous short area quickness as a player. He displays the ability to maintain his speed in and out of breaks as a route runner. His ability to stop on a dime allows him to be very deceptive with his stems. A large portion of his route production comes in the short to intermediate area where his short area burst can shine. Lack of true long speed means Washington struggles to threaten defenses vertically as a route runner. Washington has dependable hands over the middle, he attacks the ball with his massive hands (91st percentile) and rarely has drops. He also displays exceptional body control and ball tracking skills. Washington’s tape is littered with acrobatic catches at all areas of the field. His leaping ability and body control makes him a far better contested catch receiver than his size would indicate. Washington uses his quick stop start ability to be an effective player with the ball in his hands. Lack of speed or tackle breaking ability hurts his projection to be as much of a playmaker as he was in college.
The biggest issue with Washington is his lack of size. He possesses a small frame and short arms, traits that relegated him to a slot in college and likely in the NFL as well. He struggles to release versus press coverage, too often being ridden wide from his launch point. Reroutes are particularly effective when he attempts to cross the field. Despite his jump ball ability, larger corners are often able to out muscle him at the point of the catch. Despite the lack of size Washington is an effective blocker. He is willing and uses good technique even if his frame limits the ways he can be used.
Washington lacks the physical traits to even be a true alpha wide receiver. However, given his route running ability and dependable hands he should be a high floor instant impact player. He projects best as a high volume slot that acts as a teams WR2/3 in the NFL. His draft range starts towards the middle half of Day 2, when teams look for auxiliary pieces for their offense.
