Summary
Quentin Johnston burst onto the scene in 2022 with his first 1,000 yard season of his career. His blend of size and speed makes him a homerun threat every time he touches the ball. A long strider that quickly gets up to speed he consistently threatens defenses vertically. Surprisingly quick feet for a man of his size and above average contact balance makes him a YAC threat as well, especially on crossers and deep overs. Johnston runs an excellent vertical route tree where he can use his speed to turn defenders hips before snapping off routes. He is also an excellent zone route runner, especially when given a clear release. A hard vertical stem with his athleticism and feel for coverage makes him a difficult cover. For a bigger player you would like to see Johnston be more physical at the line of scrimmage. Too often do smaller defenders get inside his frame and throw off the timing of his routes with press. Johnston’s size shows up when he is asked to block but he plays too small in his routes allowing physical DBs to dictate his route pacing which limits his separation at times. As a deep threat his speed and ball tracking skills are excellent but he struggles at the catch point. Despite his athleticism and size he is often out-physicaled at the catch point by smaller defenders. You would like to see Johnston use his superior physical tools to rise and snatch balls out of the air. Johnston struggles on these types of plays because he does not appear comfortable attacking the ball with his hands. Tape shows a body catcher and this can lead to a lot of drops (over 10% drop rate in 2022). This also allows DBs to get back into plays too often. Johnston has all the physical tools to be a dominant WR at the next level especially given his above average quickness and route running at his size. However, if he does not expand his route tree and learn to play to his size he is at risk of being a player who largely wins with just his athleticism. Johnston’s physical tools should lead to him hearing his name called in the Top 50 of draft night; if a team can unlock a more aggressive mindset he could be a star.
