Summary
Rashee Rice, the former three star recruit, is one of the most productive players in SMU history. Over the course of three years he amassed 3,000+ yards and 25 scores. Rice wins with aggressive hands and physical plays at the catch point. He is an explosive leaper with exceptional body control. Rice was one of the top players in all of college football during 2022 when it came to contested catches. His physical nature carries over to his blocking as well, where his hard nosed style translates both out wide and in the slot. The concern with Rice is how translatable his game is at the next level. There are not a lot of players that win in contested catch scenarios at around 6’ 0” in the league. Rice is not a fast player (4.51 40 Time) and he doesn’t really separate versus man coverage. He does have a well rounded route tree and a good nose for the soft spots in zone, so his long term home may be optimal as a slot. Lack of elite physical traits for an outside receiver at his size and a play style that may not translate well leaves him closer to an Early Day 3-Late Day 2 player. Rice should be a stalwart special teams player at the worst. In the right system he can be a solid WR3 due to his blocking and dependable hands. He should be able to carve himself out a nice role in the NFL as a QB’s safety blanket that does the little things well. Rice projects as a strong number three receiver that adds a layer of physicality and reliable ball skills to an offense.
