Summary
Riley Moss was a two sport athlete, starring in both Football and Track, before committing to Iowa. At Iowa he was a 5 year contributor on defense, being named a team captain for his final two years. Moss is an instinctual zone corner with exceptional ball skills. His track background shows up in his ability to run with receivers down the field. A long strider with smooth hips he thrives in Cover 3 and press bail scenarios. Moss’ combination of instincts and excellent ball skills (11 career INTs) allow him to be a splash player on the back end. However, lack of length (8th percentile arm length) and foot speed lead to struggles as a man corner. Moss lacks the physicality and size to mix it up with receivers at the line of scrimmage. His lack of size also shows up as a run defender where he struggles to disengage from blocks and lacks a large tackle radius. Moss doesn’t have fear and routinely filled the alley as a run defender even if he wasn’t very successful. Primarily a RCB at the collegiate level in zone schemes his versatility is limited. Attempts to play him in the slot exposes his lack of lateral movement skills. However, Moss’ instincts and exceptional ball skills indicate he should have the ability to contribute as a safety at the next level. Moss should have the requisite athleticism to start his career at corner first, but versatility on the backend of defense is never a bad thing. Moss projects as a zone-heavy corner where he can use his closing speed and instincts to make an impact. A strong candidate to go Day 2 with his athletic profile and special teams ability, Moss has the upside of a potential starter in the NFL.
