Summary
Steve Avila entered TCU as a 4 star offensive line recruit. He then went on to be a 4 year contributor at both guard and center. He was one of the captains for a TCU team that reached the national title in 2022. Avila is a powerful downhill blocker. He has the nasty demeanor offensive line coaches love, routinely finishing his blocks to completion. His wide frame and low center of gravity allow him to get under defenders' pads and drive them. Avila does have below average length for an offensive lineman (35th Percentile), leading him to struggle with longer defenders. Defenders that can keep him outside of their frame can take advantage of his average balance and slow foot speed. Avila’s lack of foot quickness also becomes an issue when asked to block on the move. He struggles to reach landmarks out in space and balance is an issue on the move, because of this he projects best in a gap scheme. As a pass blocker his size and low center of gravity allow him to anchor against even the largest of defensive lineman. Avila counteracts his lack of foot speed with excellent technique in terms of marrying his hands and feet. When he is able to get inside a defender's frame his tremendous hand strength typically means he is there to stay until he finishes his block. If a defender is able to get a step on him Avila lacks the necessary athleticism or length to ride them wide. Avila is an experienced guard with years of high level play at multiple positions along the offensive line. He projects as a starting guard in a gap scheme with center versatility. Power run teams that will take advantage of his downhill power and nasty demeanor will be the best places for him to see success.
