Summary
Tyler Steen was a 3-Star recruit out of highschool before committing to Vanderbilt. He started 33 games over 4 years for the Commodores at both left and right tackle before transferring to Alabama. Steen started all 13 games at LT for the Crimson Tide and only gave up 2 sacks all year.
Steen is an experienced player who has shown the versatility to play both tackle spots. As a run blocker he wins with quickness and agility. An excellent athlete, he has the movement skills to reach 4i and 3T, as well as cut off backside blockers at the second level. Steen is quick out of his stance and shows ability as a puller. He does have a poor tendency to stand up straight when getting out of his stance and struggles with leverage at the point of attack. As a result he does not generate large amounts of displacement in the run game. Steen often shoots out aggressively to counteract this but struggles to control his body, often getting out over his skies. He also struggles to locate his hands in the run game, too often failing to sustain blocks.
Steen is a better pass protector than he is run blocker. His lateral agility and footwork allows him to vary his sets. He shows the ability to mirror faster rushers out in space. Steen does an excellent job of squeezing the B gap and picking up stunts in pass protection. Additionally, he displays the ability to smoothly reset his hands when put in disadvantageous positions. Steen has below average length for an offensive tackle (9th percentile arm length) and it shows up versus long athletic rushers. He struggles to attach his hands and his average core strength becomes an issue versus bull rushes and straight arms. The leverage issues that plague his run blocking also become a problem versus longer rushers when he is not able to locate his hands. Steen has a poor tendency to open up his gate too early in pass protection, unnecessarily exposing himself to counters.
It’s rare that Alabama’s starting left tackle does not elicit more fanfare this late in a draft cycle, especially with the athletic profile Steen has. Steen is a smooth mover with left right versatility, who only got better over the course of the year. Questions about balance and length may indicate a future move to guard but the Vanderbilt transfer shows enough starting caliber tackle traits that he deserves a shot outside first. Steen projects best as a swing tackle with starting caliber upside in a zone run scheme. His athleticism and experience should allow him to start at four spots along the line in a pinch as he works to improve his technique and eventually move into a starting role.
