Summary
Tyree Wilson out of Texas Tech is a physical specimen. At 6’6” 270 pounds he possesses tremendous power and excellent speed for a man of his size. He utilizes the power in his legs and hands to dominate opposing offensive lineman. As a rusher he uses the bull rush and straight arm to win. His closing speed is top notch, Wilson is able to chase down ball carriers before they have time to pull away. The issue is if he cannot win with his physical tools his pass rush stalls and he can tend to disappear. Lack of any real hand counters and only above average bend means if his opponent is able to kick step and anchor he can be taken out of the play. As a run defender he uses his speed and power to be a dynamic penetrator and uses his size and length on the edge to turn back ball carriers. Too frequently is he a tick late off the ball and gets caught in read and react mode, neutralizing his natural gifts. In all aspects of his game he needs more control, for all his physical tools he often plays like a Bull in a China Shop. It greats a wrecking ball of havoc on good plays but too often does he run himself out of plays. Another plus for Wilson is his versatility. In 2022 he mostly lined up as a 5T or wider but with experience all the way down to the 1T over the past 3 years and his physical makeup he should have the ability to reduce down inside especially on passing downs where his quickness will give guards trouble. Wilson entering the draft is an athletic marvel who mostly relies on motor and physical tools. A team taking him is banking on their ability to develop his technique and control to harness those physical tools. Wilson possesses All-Pro upside and should be a first rounder because of it but it may take little while to be fully realized.
