Summary
Xavier Hutchinson was a two sport star, lettering in football and basketball, in high school before heading to Blinn Junior College. In 2020 he transferred to Iowa State as one of the top JUCO WRs in the nation. The Redshirt Senior was a star for the Cyclones, receiving All-Big 12 honors in all three years. Hutchinson was uber productive during his time at Iowa State leaving the school with almost 3,000 receiving yards in his career.
Hutchinson is a tough physical receiver that wins with technique as a route runner. He shows good quickness to release at the line of scrimmage. He does an excellent job using his leverage and size at the top of the route to seal off defenders. Hutchinson shows smooth hips that let him get cleanly in and out of breaks with little wasted movement. Versus zone he shows a knack for finding soft spots and always works to make himself available on scramble drills. Hutchinson has excellent ball skills down the field. While not an explosive leaper, he controls his body very well in the air routinely making catches outside his radius. When combined with strong dependable hands on routine catches he is a reliable pass catcher no matter the situation. Hutchinson is a strong blocker in the run game, utilizing his size to make an impact. His physicality shines through in this aspect of his game as well. He always is looking for work and rarely takes plays off.
Hutchinson does a lot of good things as a receiver but lack of athleticism limits his ceiling. He is not particularly fast or explosive. He does not show the deep speed to threaten defenses vertically, and while he can use his size to make a guy or two miss he is not a playmaker with the ball. Hutchinson wins on his routes with size and technique but he struggles to separate versus man coverage. He lacks the quick twitch change of direction skills to generate space versus top man corners as evidenced by his 65 contested catch scenarios over 3 years at Iowa State.
Hutchinson may not have the highest ceiling in this class due to limited athleticism but he does a lot of things well. He has the route running, blocking ability and ball skills to stick as a high floor role player in the NFL. Hutchinson projects best as WR2/3 in offense that utilizes him as a power slot. He will make his money on third down and the red zone while also being a strong contributor in the run game.
