Summary
Zay Flowers, the former 3-Star recruit from Florida, has been a massive 4 year contributor for the Eagles. The senior WR received All-ACC honors in each of his final three seasons for Boston College with over 3,000 cumulative career receiving yards. Flowers is a dynamic receiver who wins with his quickness and route running. Few players in this draft class have the stop start ability that Flowers has. An excellent route runner he is able to sink his hips smoothly in and out of his breaks, consistently generating large amounts of separation. He has plus long speed that allows him to threaten DBs vertically. His speed and quickness makes him a dangerous YAC threat as well. Flowers has plus contact balance at his size and exceptional instincts with the ball in his hands. He is the type of player you want to manufacture touches because of what he can do out in space. Flowers' main concern is going to be his lack of size. Short arms (sub 30”) and issues with physicality on tape indicate a long term home in the slot despite showing versatility in his alignments and route tree in college. Flowers makes up for his lack of size with tremendous leaping ability and body control. For a player of his size he is very good at rising and high pointing balls. Flowers also displays high end ball tracking down the field. A 50% contested catch rate his senior season is a great number for a sub 6-foot player. Flowers does have a tendency to be a bit of a body catcher and it has manifested in the form of a drop problem (10% drop rate in 2022), but his ability to attack the ball with his hands in jump ball scenarios indicates it’s something that can be coached out of him. Flowers is one of the most explosive and dynamic wide receivers in this class. Lack of size may relegate him to being a slot only at the next level but in a league that lives 11 personnel that’s completely fine. Flowers projects as a high end WR2 at the next level that will add a layer of explosiveness, separation and YAC ability to whatever offense he lands with.
