Summary
Keon Coleman looks like he was built in a lab to play NFL WR. At 6’ 4” 215, with plus speed and movement skills he has the physical makeup to be a dominant perimeter threat at the next level. Coleman excels on the vertical route tree where he combines his high end burst and play strength to power through defensive backs. A walking highlight real he has tremendous body control and jump timing on balls down the field. Coleman weaponizes his naturally strong hands and impressive wingspan to be a dominant jump ball player. Unlike most bigger WRs, Coleman is also a positive with the ball in his hands. His combo of contact balance and first step explosion makes him a nightmare in the open field, a fact that Florida State quickly recognized in his first year there by using him as a punt returner. Despite his physical gifts, Coleman struggled to make a consistent impact in 2023 for the Seminoles after being one of the highest ranked transfers following his breakout sophomore season at Michigan State. Coleman has a very vanilla release package and struggles to consistent attack defenders leverage in coverage. His reliance on winning with his size and athleticism did not fair as well when matched up top end CBs (see Nate Wiggins of Clemson). Coleman also struggles to gain separation on horizontal breaking routes where his lack of foot speed was a factor, often over chopping his feet resulting in slow breaks. Coleman also is very inconsistent when it comes to finding soft spots in zones. Too often does he drift aimlessly or just fly by the correct spot to throttle down. Improving his ability to be in the right spot at the right time will be a big stepping stone for him at the next level to maximize his powerful frame and dependable hands, especially on money downs. Coleman has all the physical tools to be a WR1 at the next level. When he was locked during his college career he was not only a dominant WR at the catch point, but a high impact blocker and terrifying YAC threat. Questions about his polish and the consistency of his play may drop him down in the pecking order of a stacked WR class but with his tools the young age of 20, a team will take a swing on the potential of future star X WR.
