Summary
Olu Fashanu leaves Penn State with the rare distinction of being a high upside toolsy player with strong college production. The 2x All-Big Ten Left Tackle never allowed a sack in his collegiate career, a multi year career that saw him log over 1,300 snaps. Fashanu possesses rare physical gifts for the tackle position. At 6’ 6”, 315+ pounds, with good length and special movement skills he checks all the physical boxes for an offensive lineman. Fashanu has quick explosive feet that allow him to climb to the second level and be an effective blocker in space. He has the movement skills to consistently get position himself with optimal leverage on zone blocking scheme runs. Those same movement skills allow him to be a dominant pass protector, the area of his game that is the most NFL ready at this point in time. Fashanu’s foot speed allows him to vary his set points and mirror speed rushers in space. It also grants him fantastic recovery speed and at the ability to adjust to stunts on the fly. When combined with powerful punches capable of locking out rushers and the core strength and flexibility to anchor versus power he is a pro ready pass protector. For all of Fashanu’s gifts he still is raw, especially as a run defender. Despite his size and athleticism, he struggles to maintain block in the run game due to poor technique. Fashanu struggles to keep his pad level down and his base wide, especially on drive blocks. It allows defenders to neutralize his physical gifts and slip off him when he is off balance. Inconsistent punch placement, his hands attach wider than they should, reduces Fashanu’s ability to steer and control defenders despite high end grip strength. Fashanu at only 21 years old is a high level pass protector with the physical tools to be a dominant 2-way tackle at the next level. While it may take him a bit to get fully up to speed at the NFL level, teams comfortable projecting his tools will likely have him as the top OT in this class.
