Scouting Report
Jahdae Barron is a former 4-Star recruit from the state of Texas. He was a 5 year contributor for the Longhorns with 38 starts over 56 games. Barron was a quality starter in both 2022 and 2023 receiving All-Big 12 honors in both years before exploding in 2024 as a unanimous All-American and Jim Thorpe winner.
Barron has a thick compact frame with good play strength. He is a tough physical DB with excellent durability. A leader for the Longhorns defense, Barron is extremely smart and with good versatility, playing a variety of spots including inside and outside CB as well as some dime LB. Barron is at his best in coverage when asked to play in zone. He displays excellent recognition skills to pick up and pass off routes from deep and underneath alignments. He is adept at reading players body language as well as QBs eyes in order to close on routes in front of him. Barron had a tremendous year in 2024 in terms of ball production, with 5 INTs and 9 PBUs. He is quick to drive on routes and uses his size to play through the frame of the WR to disrupt the catch point. He displays the concentration and ball skills to convert PBUs to INTs when given the chance. Barron’s IQ and closing burst also show up in run fits. He is quick to close out of his pedal and drive on underneath checkdowns. He is a dependable tackler who attacks under control with proper leverage. As a run defender Barron uses his positioning to spill ball carries back to help and isn’t afraid to take on contact. His time at nickel CB and dime LB results in above average run defense for the position.
Barron lacks ideal length or athleticism for an outside CB. He is quicker than fast and can struggle matching the top speed of WRs down the field. Texas didn’t often ask him to play man coverage, particularly in press, but he was average at it when he did. Barron has bulky stiff hips that limit his ability to mirror WRs in space. He struggles to react quickly to routes crossing his face. He relies on technique and physicality to disrupt WRs stems but when he gets out of position his tendency to grab will lead to flags at the next level. Barron is a competent enough in man coverage for a defense to not have to hide him, especially when matched up with bigger WRs and TEs, but it will likely never be a strength for him. He may be better suited to a long term home in the slot or even at safety, in order to compensate for his lack of elite physical tools.
Barron projects as a starting CB in a zone coverage scheme. He can play outside in base sets and slide down into the slot in nickel, where his instincts and run defense can shine. Barron lacks the traditional traits of a high first round pick but his blend of IQ, versatility and ball skills should land him somewhere the mid to late first round as a high floor starter.
