Scouting Report
Jalen Milroe is a former 4-Star recruit from the state of Texas. He got off to a rocky beginning as a starter in 2023, briefly being benched early in the year, before turning around the season and leading the Crimson Tide to the College Football Playoffs. Milroe started all 13 games again in 2024, with more mixed results as a team and individual.
Milroe is a dynamic athlete with a powerful compact frame. He possesses the ideal physical traits for a modern day dual threat quarterback, with legit 4.4 speed and a rocket arm. Milroe is a dangerous ball carrier who can create chunk gains when he breaks contain. He is also capable of being the focal point of an offense’s run game ,with his ability to win as an option or power quarterback. As a passer, Milroe is at his best throwing down the field where he has plus deep ball touch and accuracy. His ball has easy velocity out of his hand, with the ability to drive the ball into tight windows and to the far sideline. Milroe took a step forward as a processor in 2024, particularly in the quick game. He does a solid job finding pre-snap mismatches and targeting them. He is quick to work through his progressions underneath and even works to backside digs on occasion. He also displays the anticipation needed to complete deep out breaking routes to the far sideline.
For all his athletic gifts, Milroe is still a major work in progress. He is extremely inconsistent down to down as a passer. His base and footwork are all over the place, a bad habit that only gets worse under pressure, causing his accuracy to be scattershot. He frequently forces himself to throw off-platform for no reason other than he moves off his initial spot and never resets. He is a fastball thrower who struggles to take power of his throws, making life difficult on his WRs. Milroe has a hard time getting the ball up and down to hit layered throws, often missing high putting the ball in harms way. His front side will also fly open when he needs to drive balls, particularly to his left and miss wide. Milroe took a step forward as a processor in 2024, but still makes far too many mistakes. He will gloss over open routes in the progression that a player of his experience shouldn’t miss. He stares down targets and overlooks lurking underneath defenders. Milroe’s shoddy footwork is also an issue when it comes to navigating the pocket. He dislikes climbing through traffic, and is quick to eject and scramble to space when he feels heat.
Milroe profiles best as a project backup who gets time to sit and work on his craft. The physical tools and leaderships qualities are high level for a prospect but there are too many inconsistencies in his game. Milroe projects as a late Day-2 pick as a risky upside project.
