Scouting Report
Shavon Revel is a former 0-star recruit from the state of North Carolina. He spent his first two year playing JUCO ball at Louisburg college, before transferring to ECU prior to the 2022 season. Revel was a 2nd Team All-AAC player in 2023 and was slated to be so again in 2024 before tearing his ACL in Week 3.
Revel is a big athletic corner with an impressive wingspan. He is a physical player with an aggressive temperament. He uses his long arms to attack receivers in press coverage and disrupt their release timings. Revel is a sticky man coverage defender with the foot quickness to stay attached when he gets first contact. A former track star in high school, he displays the long speed to turn and run vertically, as well as carry crossers the width of the field. Revel uses his closing burst to undercut receivers and consistently make plays on the ball in man coverage. His size and length allows him to box out smaller players and be disruptive at the catch point. Revel’s toughness as a coverage player translates to run defense as well. He is a willing and able run defender who has the size to take on and discard blocks. He is a dependable tackler in space who quickly closes out of coverage with power behind his pads. His long speed and constant motor make him an impactful pursuit defender as well.
Revel is a bigger corner but his frame is still rather lanky and could use more mass. His long leg frame is fairly high hipped as well, which can limit his lateral mobility. Quicker WRs are able to cross his face and create separation at the line of scrimmage and at the top of their breaks, if they can open up his hips. This is particularly an issue when Revel is in zone coverage. He gets too quickly into his half turn as a deep zone player and receivers are able to easy access completions underneath. As a whole Revel’s zone coverage game needs work. He allows far too many easy completions and is often delayed closing on concepts in front of him. With his burst he should be able to put himself in the play far more often than he does. Despite Revel’s good pass break up numbers, he struggles to convert them into interceptions. He has inconsistent hands and is good for a handful of plays a year where easy turnovers skip right between his gloves.
Revel projects as an outside press man corner. He has impressive physical tools to go with the ideal temperament for that style of play. A small school player coming off an injury isn’t ideal for a players draft stock, but Revel’s traits and 2023 tape should make him a lock to be a Top-50 pick.
