Scouting Report
Tyler Warren is a former 3-Star recruit from the state of Virginia. He was a high school quarterback in addition to being an All-State basketball and baseball player. It took a couple years for Warren to see starting reps, but was a All-Conference honoree in both 2023 and 2024, the later campaign where he finished Top-3 in the country in receptions, yards and touchdowns.
Warren is a big powerful tight end with the movement skills of a much smaller player. He was a versatile piece for the Penn State offense, splitting time between in-line tight end and receiver, with some H-Back and even Wildcat QB reps mixed in. Warren primarily wins as a receiver in the short to intermediate areas of the field. He has the size to bully smaller defenders at the top of his routes and the burst to pull away from linebackers. He is a crisp route runner who knows how to use his leverage to create space versus man coverage. Warren has strong hands that attack the ball outside his frame in all directions. He uses his large frame to box out defenders at the catch point and bring in tough contested catches. As evidenced by his usage as a Wildcat QB, he is also a weapon with the ball in his hands. His burst and contact balance make him difficult to bring down in the box and in space. Warren is an eager and willing blocker. He brings power behind his pads as a lead blocker, and looks to finish smaller players in space. He has the requisite size and strength to match up with defensive lineman when in-line, where does an excellent job working his feet through the whistle to turn and drive defenders at the point of attack.
Warren is a very good athlete but lacks the top end speed the true top tier receiving tight ends have. He wasn’t often used as a vertical threat as he lacks the speed to consistently separate down the field. It also leads him to being cutoff when he breaks into the open field, and defenders who can attack his legs are able chop him down. For as good as a blocker as Warren is, he does need to clean up some technique issues. His hands will attach too wide at the 2nd level which leads to grabbing.
Warren profiles as an in-line Y TE who starts in 11p with the versatility to split out wide. His combination of receiving and blocking skills is rare for a tight end prospect to display at such a high level level. Warren profiles as a Top-15 pick, even at a devalued position, and should be one of the better players tight end from day one.
