Summary
Troy Fautanu was the best player on the top offensive line in the country in 2023. The Washington Huskies Left Tackle has been one of the most dependable players in college football the past two years, logging over 900 snaps in back to back campaigns. Fautanu is an intelligent lineman who understands protections and leverage very well. He brings a high level of aggression and toughness to the position that permeates through the rest of the offense. Fautanu is a good athlete with fantastic straight-line quickness and speed. He leverages his athletic ability to be a tremendous blocker in space where he is easily able win on zone scheme runs or pull from his tackle spot to block at the 2nd level. Fautanu has the power to win on gap scheme runs as well, where his thick powerful lower half and strong hands allow him to create push at the point of attack. His experience and hands really show up in pass protection where he does an excellent job changing up his set points and punch timing to keep defenders off guard. Fautanu’s powerful lower half and good balance allow him to absorb contact from power rushers and protect the pocket with ease. Despite Fautanu’s polish as a pass protector he does run into trouble when asked to live on an island in space. He has a bad habit of over setting and showing a weak inside shoulder. Defenders that are successfully able to set up combo moves are able to expose his average lateral agility and beat him inside. Despite having the required length and intelligence to play tackle at the next level Fautanu’s struggles pass protecting in space indicate a potential move inside at the next level. Fautanu projects as a immediate starter at tackle with the versatility to slide inside an be an All-Pro caliber guard. His football instincts and toughness combined with his well rounded game will make him a coaches favorite. While he may lack some of the upside other lineman in this class he has one of the highest floors and should be a Day 1 starter for his team.
